Welcome to week 14 of your twin pregnancy, mama! You’ve made it to the second trimester, and with that, you’re probably noticing some changes that are about to get a whole lot bigger!
If you’re expecting twins, you might feel like your twin baby bump is making an early debut, and that’s completely normal! As you move further into your pregnancy, your body is working hard to create space for two growing babies. This week, we’ll focus on what you can expect as your belly begins to blossom and how to care for yourself during this exciting time.
How are you feeling mama?
Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 14 weeks
Week 14 marks the beginning of what many moms call the “honeymoon phase” of pregnancy. For a lot of women, the nausea and fatigue of the first trimester start to ease up around this time, making way for a bit more energy and comfort. You might even find yourself feeling more like your old self again—but with one big difference: your growing belly!
If you haven’t noticed it already, you may begin seeing your belly really pop around week 14. With two babies on board, your uterus is expanding at a faster rate than it would with a singleton, which means your bump might start showing earlier. Some women are excited to show off their belly, while others may still be adjusting to their changing body. Wherever you fall, your belly is a sign that your little ones are growing right along with you!
What are your twins up to this week?
Your Twins at 14 Weeks – Height & Weight
At 14 weeks, your twins are about the size of lemons. Each baby measures approximately 3.5 inches (9 cm) from head to bottom and weighs around 1.5 ounces (42 grams).
Their growth is now accelerating, and your belly is making room for their rapid development. As they continue to grow, you’ll notice more changes in your body, especially around your expanding belly!
Your Twins’ Fetal Development at 14 Weeks
Your twins are busy growing and refining their skills inside your womb. Their nervous system is becoming more advanced, allowing them to make more purposeful movements like wiggling their fingers and toes. Although you may not feel these little flutters yet, they’re practising lots of new motions!
Another exciting milestone is the development of their facial muscles. Your babies are now capable of making tiny facial expressions, like frowning or squinting, though they aren’t linked to emotions just yet. Their sense of taste is also starting to form, as taste buds are developing on their tongues. While they won’t be tasting much at the moment, this is an important step toward preparing them for eating once they’re born.
The lanugo, a fine layer of hair, is beginning to cover their bodies. This delicate hair helps to protect their skin and keep them warm, and it will stick around for most of the pregnancy. Additionally, their thyroid gland is now producing hormones, a key development that supports growth and metabolic regulation.
As their bones continue to harden, especially in their arms and legs, they’re becoming more mobile and practicing their coordination. Soon enough, you’ll begin to feel these movements as tiny kicks and nudges!
What you might be wondering about this week
When Will I Start to Show in a Twin Pregnancy?
Many twin mamas notice that their belly becomes more prominent between weeks 14 and 20—though some may have noticed their belly growing even earlier.
Because you’re carrying two babies, your uterus expands more quickly than it would in a singleton pregnancy. So, while many moms expecting one baby might not have a visible bump until later, twin moms often show earlier.
As you move through the second trimester, your belly will likely continue growing at a rapid pace. By the end of this trimester, you’ll REALLY notice the difference – as will all those well-meaning strangers who love to pat your belly and ask if it’s twins.
Your uterus is stretching to accommodate two growing babies, and you may begin to feel some pressure or tightness as a result, and you might even start feeling tiny kicks in the coming weeks! It’s an exciting time, so get ready to see your bump transform.
If you haven’t popped yet, don’t worry! Every pregnancy is different, and some women carry their twins more discreetly in the early stages.
Whether your bump is big or just starting to show, rest assured that it’s a healthy sign of your growing babies.
How Much Weight Should I Expect to Gain at Week 14?
During the second trimester, it’s common to see more consistent weight gain. For moms of twins, a typical recommendation is to gain 1-2 pounds per week from this point forward. By week 14, you might have gained around 4-8 pounds in total, though this varies based on factors like morning sickness and your pre-pregnancy weight.
What’s most important is that you’re eating nutritious, balanced meals that provide energy for both you and your babies. Your growing belly is a reflection of the amazing work your body is doing to nourish those little ones!
I have an article that discusses weight gain during your twin pregnancy and why it’s important to keep seeing the scales go up (if you can). Have a read and then discuss any concerns you have with your pregnancy care team.
How to Care for Your Skin as Your Belly Grows
As your belly grows, your skin will be stretching to keep up. You might start experiencing some itching or tightness in your abdominal area—both are common during pregnancy, especially in a twin pregnancy. To keep your skin comfortable, moisturize daily with products that contain shea butter, vitamin E, or coconut oil. These can help soothe dryness and itchiness, while also keeping your skin hydrated and soft.
Stretch marks may also start appearing as your belly grows. While they’re a normal part of pregnancy, staying moisturized can help minimize them and keep your skin feeling good.
I used two products throughout my pregnancy, both of them multiple times a day, and I managed to avoid any serious stretchmarks (and I was pretty huge towards the end of my pregnancy!).
First, I used Aveeno Body Moisturiser and then applied Bio-Oil over the top. I think the trick is to start early and apply it multiple times a day.
Maternity Clothes for Your Twin Pregnancy Belly
If you haven’t already switched to maternity clothes, now might be the time to consider it! As your belly grows, comfort becomes key. Look for stretchy, adjustable maternity leggings and pants that accommodate your bump. Flowing tops, loose dresses, and belly bands can help support your growing belly while giving you room to move comfortably.
Maternity clothes are designed to stretch and grow with you, so don’t hesitate to invest in a few staple pieces that will keep you comfortable throughout your pregnancy.
Sleeping Positions with a Growing Twin Pregnancy Belly
As your belly starts to grow, finding a comfortable sleeping position can become more challenging. The best position for sleeping, especially during the second trimester, is on your side—specifically, your left side. This position improves circulation and helps reduce pressure on your organs.
To make side sleeping more comfortable, consider using a pregnancy pillow. These pillows are designed to support your growing belly, back, and hips, allowing you to sleep more comfortably through the night.
Final Thoughts
Your growing belly is a beautiful sign that your twins are thriving! Even though you might feel that you have been pregnant for a long time already, at week 14, you’re still at the beginning of your pregnancy journey.
Keep up with moisturising that gorgeous growing belly – it’s good for your skin but also a lovely way to start to bond with those beautiful babies of yours.
Your body is doing amazing things to support and grow your babies. Remember to take care of yourself, stay comfortable, and enjoy watching your twin pregnancy progress.
You’ve got this, mama!
Much love
