Products such as bouncers, breastfeeding pillows and newborn baby carriers.

Twin Pregnancy Symptoms at 22 Weeks

At 22 weeks pregnant with twins, your body is working overtime to support two growing babies, and you may notice more intense symptoms compared to a singleton pregnancy. One of the most common changes is a noticeable increase in belly size, which can lead to discomfort and round ligament pain as your uterus stretches. Many twin moms experience back pain due to the added weight, and investing in a supportive maternity belt or pregnancy pillow can help alleviate some of this discomfort.

You may also experience swelling in your feet, ankles, and hands, known as edema. This is caused by your body retaining extra fluid to support your twins. Frequent shortness of breath is another common symptom at this stage, as your growing uterus pushes up against your diaphragm. Taking breaks, resting, and practicing deep breathing exercises can help manage these symptoms. Along with shortness of breath, frequent trips to the bathroom can also become more common as your bladder feels extra pressure from your expanding uterus.

Heartburn and indigestion are also common at 22 weeks, as your growing babies press up on your stomach, making acid reflux more likely. Eating smaller meals and avoiding lying down right after eating can help ease these symptoms. You might also notice Braxton Hicks contractions, which are mild, irregular “practice contractions.” While normal, if they become painful or regular, it’s important to contact your doctor to rule out preterm labor.

Finally, fatigue can still be a major factor even during the second trimester. Carrying two babies puts additional strain on your body, leaving you feeling tired more easily. Be sure to rest as much as possible, listen to your body, and prioritize self-care. If any of your symptoms feel overwhelming, it’s always a good idea to reach out to your healthcare provider for support.

Don’t hesitate to reach out to your doctor if you have any concerns, and remember, it’s okay to take it easy. Your body is doing something incredible—growing not one, but two beautiful babies!

What are your twins up to this week?

Your Twins at 22 Weeks – Height & Weight

At 22 weeks, your babies are each about the size of a papaya! They measure around 11 inches (28 cm) from head to heel and weigh about 1 pound (450 grams) each. As always, keep in mind that twins may not grow at exactly the same rate. Fraternal twins, in particular, can be different sizes based on their individual genetics, but that’s perfectly normal.

Your Twins’ Fetal Development at 22 Weeks

At 22 weeks, your twins are entering a key time in their development as their senses sharpen and their bodies prepare for life outside the womb. Their sense of hearing is advancing, so they can now hear sounds like your voice, heartbeat, and even external noises.

Their movements are becoming more coordinated, and you’ll likely feel stronger kicks and rolls as they practice using their muscles. Their bones are continuing to harden, and their skin is thickening, though it’s still covered in vernix caseosa, a protective coating, and lanugo, fine downy hair that shields their skin from amniotic fluid.

Inside the womb, their lungs are beginning to produce surfactant, an essential substance that will help them breathe once they’re born. They’re also starting to practice swallowing amniotic fluid, which helps develop their digestive and respiratory systems.

Meanwhile, your babies are growing more hair, and their facial features are becoming more defined. They’re even practicing little facial expressions, although they are reflexive at this point. These developments are helping to prepare your twins for the big world they’ll soon be joining!

What You Might Be Wondering About This Week

Twin Baby Gear for Your Nursery

Planning a nursery for twins requires a bit more strategy than for a single baby, but with a few tips, you’ll have a space that’s both functional and beautiful. Here’s a rundown of everything you’ll need to consider when setting up your nursery for your two bundles of joy.

Crib Options: One or Two?

One of the first big questions is whether to use one crib or two. In the early months, many parents of twins opt for one crib, allowing their babies to co-sleep. Twins are often comforted by each other’s presence, and there’s something heartwarming about watching your two babies snuggled up together. But remember, as they grow, they will need their own space to sleep safely.

If you decide to start with one crib, you’ll probably need to transition to two separate cribs after a few months—typically by the time they start rolling over. If you have the room, setting up two cribs from the beginning can save you the hassle of rearranging the nursery later. Look for cribs that convert to toddler beds to get the most bang for your buck!

Double the Diaper Station: Must-Have Gear for Efficient Changes

With two babies, you’ll be changing diapers non-stop, so a well-stocked and organized changing station (or two!) is a must. Some parents set up two diaper stations—one in the nursery and another in a main living space—so they can easily change diapers without running up and down stairs.

Be sure to stock each station with plenty of diapers, wipes, creams, and extra clothes. A good diaper pail is also essential for managing all those dirty diapers—trust me, it adds up quickly with twins! Organization is key here. Consider using drawer dividers, baskets, or hanging organizers to keep everything within reach.

Space-Saving Furniture for a Twin Nursery

Space can be a real challenge in a twin nursery, especially with all the gear that comes with two babies. Multifunctional furniture is your best friend! Look for cribs that convert into toddler beds, dressers that double as changing tables, and gliders with storage underneath. You might also consider a mini crib if you’re working with a smaller room.

Using vertical space is another great way to maximize your nursery’s layout. Install shelves above the dresser for extra storage or hooks on the wall to hang baby essentials like blankets, swaddles, or diaper bags.

Essential Twin Baby Gear for Sleep Time

Creating a soothing sleep environment is crucial for any baby, but especially for twins, who might have different sleep patterns. Noise machines are a lifesaver for drowning out household noise, especially if one twin wakes up before the other. Blackout curtains are also a great investment to help your babies nap during the day.

Swaddles specifically designed for twins can help soothe them to sleep, and some parents find success with twin-specific sleeping gear like bassinets with dividers. This allows your babies to sleep close to each other but safely separated.

Twin-Friendly Rocking Chairs and Gliders

You’ll be spending a lot of time rocking and feeding your twins, so having a comfortable chair is a must. Wide gliders or rocking chairs are perfect for tandem feedings or holding both babies at once for those sweet cuddle sessions. Look for chairs with good back support and a smooth rocking motion—your body will thank you!

Storage Solutions for Double the Gear

Two babies mean twice the clothes, toys, and gear. Smart storage solutions are a must to keep your nursery functional and clutter-free. Consider closet organizers with hanging rods, drawer dividers for tiny baby clothes, and under-crib storage bins for items like extra diapers or swaddles. Baskets and bins are great for toys and books—just be sure everything is easy to access so you can grab what you need in a hurry!

Choosing the Best Twin Baby Monitors

Having a reliable baby monitor is key, especially when you have two little ones to keep an eye on. For twins, consider a split-screen monitor or a system that can handle two cameras. This way, you can watch both babies at once, whether they’re sharing a crib or sleeping separately. Some monitors even offer extra features like temperature tracking or movement sensors, which can be reassuring for parents of newborns.

Decorating a Twin Nursery: Tips for Personalization

Even though your twins will be sharing a room, it’s nice to give each baby their own little corner of the space. You can personalize the nursery by using different colors, bedding, or wall decals for each baby. Some parents choose a neutral theme for the main decor, then add pops of color to designate each baby’s area.

Name plaques, personalized blankets, or individual artwork are sweet ways to make the room feel special for both of your babies, while still keeping the design cohesive.

Feeding Gear: What You’ll Need for Two

Feeding two babies at once is no small feat! Whether you plan to breastfeed, bottle-feed, or do a combination, having the right gear will make your life a lot easier. Twin nursing pillows can help you tandem breastfeed, while bottle warmers with double capacity are handy for formula-feeding or breast milk storage.

You’ll also want to think ahead to when your babies start solids. Consider how much space you’ll need for two high chairs or booster seats and start thinking about an organized setup for all those baby bottles, spoons, and bibs.

Safety First: Babyproofing for Two

With twins, you’ve got twice the curiosity—and mobility—on your hands! Babyproofing is key, especially when you’ll have two little ones crawling and exploring at the same time. Start with outlet covers, furniture anchors for dressers and bookshelves, and crib safety measures. As your babies grow, you’ll need to keep a close eye on their cribs, especially if one twin starts climbing before the other!

Before you go…

Mama, you’re doing an amazing job preparing for your twins! With a little planning and the right gear, your twin nursery will be a cozy, functional space for your babies to grow and thrive. Keep taking it one step at a time, and before you know it, you’ll be snuggling those sweet babies in the nursery you’ve lovingly prepared for them.
